Youth & Reserves Review – February 2010

February at the Chelsea academy has been a real mixed bag for the Youth and Reserve teams. One side has seen the Youth Team extend their unbeaten run from December and progress in the FA Youth cup to the semi finals and the reserves side has seen us been beaten in every game in the month.

Watford Youth 0-4 Chelsea Youth

Another excellent youth cup run goes on after an excellent performance from our young charges once again. Similarities are there between this team and the team that made it to the final 2 years ago with the likes of Mellis, Stoch, Kakuta, Woods, Tejera and Van Aanholt. However i think this team is more complete, the team works so well as a unit now and there are no weak spots at all for teams to exploit. Having Jeffrey Bruma with all his experience at the back is such a big deal, with Danny Pappoe who has looked so good all season alongside side him and the excellent Deen-Conteh and Billy Clifford as the full backs the defence is as solid as you would like to see. The balance through the team is just about perfect and once they click it is very hard to stop them and break them down. The key feature of this seasons Youth Cup run is the dominance that the Chelsea boys are having during the games. The game in the last round against Pompey may have only been 1 – 0 but the dominance was still there and the game was completely in our hands.

Chelsea Res 1-2 Arsenal Res

Last night saw a mixed bag for Chelsea reserves. The team was to do without younger regulars like Connor Clifford, Josh McEachran, Jacopo Sala, Gokhan Tore, Milan Lalkovic, Jeffrey Bruma and Billy Clifford. All due to the upcomming FA Youth Cup quarter final which is on Wednesday night. That meant that comming in was Daniel Philliskirk who has been a player very much in limbo for most of the season, Nana-Ofori back from loan at Dagenham and Redbridge and Liam Bridcutt and Jacob Mellis continued from the previous game. What we saw was a decent forward line with Gael Kakuta and Jacob Meliis playing behind Fabio Borini, a strong midfield with Bridcutt, Matic and Philliskirk and a weakish looking defence with the erratic Nana and Gordon and Strickland and Magnay once again pairing up in the centre of defence.

Villa Res 3-1 Chelsea Res

Monday night saw the most misleading scoreline of the reserves season so far. We went into the game as underdogs after Aston Villa have dominated the league not just this season but last as well. They seem to take the league far more seriously than anyone else, they also had experience at the back with Wilfred Bouma and Curtis Davis in their defence. With all of that seemingly against us the blues reserves stepped up to the challenge and for the majority of the game were in control of the tempo.

Chelsea Youth 1-0 Portsmouth Youth

Chelsea fought their way into the quarter finals of the youth cup courtesy of quality performance from the young boys in blue (actually white in this case). Everything was set for a great game, Stamford bridge was the setting and for all of these young boys it was their first taste of game time at the bridge in front of a pretty decent crowd, also following a impressive win against Forest in the last round and an entertaining victory over West Ham at the weekend spirits where high and so were expectations.

Youth Cup Time Again

Tonight sees the return of the FA Youth cup, not only for the next round but the return of youth cup football to Stamford Bridge. Hopefully there will be a good crowd there tonight to cheer on the boys against a Portsmouth team that dispatched Tottenham in the last round.

Youth and Reserves Into 2010

As we begin 2010 our academy are in the strongest position they have been in for many many years. Previously, the club has been in the position where they have had to use youth players to supplement the first team due to lack of options or money.

Chelsea Res 2-0 Wolves Res

With Brentwood being unavailable for this tie we had the unusual situation of playing a league Reserves game behind closed doors at Cobham. Having previously in this seasons reserves league seen us fielding younger and younger teams we had the situation where we could draw on some the more experienced Chelsea youngsters and some who are currently back from loans.
