Comment – How The Title Was Won

Some people would argue the Premier League trophy was destined to end up in West London after Chelsea went and beat Manchester United at Old Trafford in early April. Others would be more calculated and say it was the 8-0 demolition of Wigan that truly won it; adopting an attitude of ‘it’s never over until it’s over.’

There have been certain games this season where Chelsea have showed their mettle and quality – and it is these games and these games alone that have won us the Premier League.

15. Chelsea 3-0 Birmingham

This game might have been much more difficult had Florent Malouda not scored an early header. Chelsea ended Birmingham’s incredible unbeaten streak with a gritty performance – it was a test for the title challengers and they passed brilliantly. January would ultimately prove a fruitful month for the Blues.

14. Hull City 1-1 Chelsea

You might be wondering why I’ve included this match – but this draw was a very good result. Hull were excellent on the night and only a superb Drogba freekick earned us a valuable point.

13. Chelsea 2-0 Arsenal

Don’t Arsenal just hate Didier Drogba? Another brace by the Ivorian ensured Chelsea completed their first Premier League double over the Gunners since 2006 – the last year they won the title. A disappointing end to 2009 had seen a promising start to 2010 – and the Blues were now two points clear after earlier trailing United in early February.

12. Chelsea 7-2 Sunderland

With Drogba at the African Cup of Nations, there was a thought that Chelsea would struggle without their Ivorian star. A seven-goal rout of Sunderland suggested otherwise as the Blues made it 12 goals in two games.

11. Chelsea 0-1 Internazionale Milano

You might be wondering why Chelsea’s Champions League defeat at the hands of José Mourinho aided their title bid. Well, by going out of Europe, Chelsea now had an advantage over United who would face two gruelling ties against German giants Bayern Munchen. José had done his old side a favour – a true case of a blessing in disguise.

10. Stoke 1-2 Chelsea

The Britannia Stadium is a hard place to go and achieve victory, yet Chelsea did so in the most dramatic of fashions back in September. It was Florent Malouda’s late drive that won it in stoppage time – and it was a crucial victory with Manchester United also winning – it kept the gap at three points at such an early stage.

9. Portsmouth 0-5 Chelsea

Inexplicably third when they kicked off their game in hand, the Blues crushed their FA Cup final opposition was embarrassing ease – Florent Malouda scoring a superb brace. The deficit behind leaders Manchester United was now just one point with two months of the season left.

8. Chelsea 7-1 Aston Villa

The Blues threw the gauntlet down to the league leaders with a magnificent performance against Martin O’Neill’s Aston Villa in March. United later won 4-0 at Bolton but Chelsea’s superior attacking quality was beginning to make its mark.

7. Arsenal 0-3 Chelsea

One of the performances of the season saw Chelsea maintain their lead at the top of the table. This was the first sighting of Ancelotti’s wonderfully-naive ‘top of the list’ saying.

6. Chelsea 2-1 Fulham

Arguably the most important result of the season, up to that point. After defeat at Manchester City and then Blackburn in the Carling Cup the Blues went on a run of just one win in seven matches. The Fulham game was the turnaround point – Daniel Sturridge’s deflected shot completing an unlikely comeback by a poor Chelsea side. The win was massive – confidence was now flooding again.

5. Chelsea 7-0 Stoke City

The pressure was on. United were on a role and went two points clear on the Saturday, leaving all the work to do for the Blues. Chelsea did not disappoint – it was a magnificent display and it really could have been double figures. Did I mention Kalou scored a hat-trick? His team-mates were equally as delighted (and surprised)!

4. Chelsea 1-0 Manchester United

The Battle of Stamford Bridge in November saw John Terry’s header win it for Chelsea in front of a vociferous crowd in West London. The margin was now five points and the title looked to be heading back to the Blues’ trophy cabinet.

3. Chelsea 8-0 Wigan

The day Chelsea mathematically won the league is an obvious contender not only for the most important result but the best performance. Drogba’s hat-trick won him the Golden Boot, Cech’s save from Moses won him the Golden Gloves and Ashley Cole’s volley put the cherry on the icing on the top of the cake. Chelsea were Champions.

2. Liverpool 0-2 Chelsea

The game that would be the ultimate test of Chelsea’s title credentials in early May was made a lot easier thanks to Steven Gerrard’s shocker of a backpass which was intercepted by Drogba. Lampard’s second half tap-in was merely a layer of gloss on top of  a comfortable performance.

1. Manchester United 1-2 Chelsea

An obvious choice – this crucial, crucial, crucial victory gave the Blues a massive psychological advantage over their rivals. A first league double over Sir Alex Ferguson’s defending Champions left the writing on the wall for what was to come.

Surprised you called the Wigan result as the best performance of the season. Although we got the goals, the first half was extremely sloppy and nervous. Personally, I would give the performance of the season to the 3-0 at Arsenal, or 7-1 vs Villa.

I said it was only a contender :P Personally I don’t think we came anywhere near to as good as we played at Sunderland away (3-1) or at home against Stoke when we played Wigan – but going forward in the second half we were excellent and it was still a very, very good performance.
