Frank Lampard has been confirmed as England’s vice-captain following Rio Ferdinand’s injury.
The Chelsea midfielder will act as deputy to new captain Steven Gerrard after news filtered through that Ferdinand would take no part in this summer’s World Cup.
Lampard said he was honoured but was devastated for one-time club colleague Ferdinand, with whom Lampard played with whilst at West Ham.
“I am very proud. Obviously I am very disappointed for Rio. He is a mate. But what can I do? I shall just try to give my input as a vice-captain.”
Lampard’s appointment will be a popular one amongst Chelsea supporters, as the midfield maestro scored 27 goals to help the Blues secure their first Double success last season.
