Chelsea have announced the signing of France international Tiemoue Bakayoko from AS Monaco.
Bakayoko is a product of the Rennes academy, which has produced countless stars over the years. The likes of Mickael Sylvestre, Sylvain Wiltord, Petr Cech and Ousmane Dembele all came through the ranks at Roazhon Park – Bakayoko is the latest.
He made 28 appearances for Rennes, before being snapped up by Monaco in the summer of 2014. It took a while for Bakayoko to cement his place in the starting eleven, but once he did, it was clear that he was there to stay.
The 22-year-old was influential in their title triumph last season, and was named in the UEFA Champions League team of the year, as Monaco reached the semi-finals of the competition.
Bakayoko’s good performances appeared to capture the attention of Antonio Conte, who has made his move and sealed a deal to sign him. The midfield general spoke to the Chelsea website about his delight at becoming a Blue:
“I am very happy to be here and to join this great team. I have grown up watching Chelsea. Signing was the natural thing for me because it is a club I loved very much in my childhood.”
