Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp believes that Chelsea made a huge mistake during the summer transfer window, report the Express.
You know the story, Antonio Conte’s Chelsea won the Premier League title during the Italian’s debut season at Stamford Bridge.
However, we have not been at the races this time around, and subsequently find ourselves in an unwanted scrap for Champions League qualification.
The root of our problems this term is open to interpretation, but Redknapp has a theory of his own – the departure of Diego Costa.
Costa was influential in our success last season, but re-joined Atletico Madrid following a bust-up with Conte. Redknapp believes that his exit has left Chelsea short in attack.
The Express quote the Sky Sports pundit, who says:
“It was a monumental mistake to get rid of Diego Costa. I know he was a nuisance but part of being a manager is handling these characters. I’m sure he was hot-headed, he caused problems, he’d get sent off, but he’d make the difference.”
“You look at this year at how many times they have lost games and he would have come up with a goal. That’s why now he has gone and ended up with Morata, but he has never really played regularly at a club.”
“This is the first time he has been asked to play regularly and he has found it hard with the injuries. There is no winter break for him and a bit like [Alexandre] Lacazette, they are not used to the physicality of this league.”
Redknapp is not wrong, losing Costa was a big blow. However, keeping him was not plausible, we should not keep citing this situation to justify our shortfalls. Costa is the past, Alvaro Morata is the future, let’s focus on giving him our full support.
