Chelsea are actively looking to “replace” club legend and current captain, John Terry, according to The Sun.
The famously reliable newspaper claims that our search has lead us to the Italian capital, with AS Roma’s Kostas Manolas allegedly the subject of a bid worth around 35 million Euros, which would make the 24 year-old the most expensive defender we’ve ever signed, replacing a certain Geezer who had arrived then from another European capital.
The shocking bit of news is that Roma apparently felt that our bid was TOO LOW, so they naturally asked for the much more reasonable sum of-wait for it- 45 million Euros!!!
The source of where this story comes from hardly makes it more believable, but we’ve been linked with the Greece international before and with Conte allegedly a fan of Roma players, plus the fact that we will need a center back come the end of the season, this makes some sort of sense. Manolas is very quick, strong and only 24 years old but his passing is dreadful and if he were to be paired with Zouma next season, then it would be kind of uncomfortable to have two center backs, both of who are unable to get the ball smoothly forward. There is also the fact that Manolas is by no means world class and if we have to shell out that kind of money for a player that Mourinho would probably classify as a “third class egg” in his famous players-are-eggs metaphor, so maybe there could be cheaper alternatives, who could fill the void until our dream center back pairing of Zouma and Christensen is ready to start together game in, game out.
The deal is by no means serious-so far- and if it ever gets there, one can assess the deal a lot better, but for now- just like every other thing we’ve been reading about our club, we wait.
