Diego Simeone has shown his class and humility after his side were defeated by Chelsea on Wednesday night.
Chelsea’s visit to the Wanda Metropolitano was the first ever Champions League fixture played at Atleti’s new stadium, but it was a night to forget for the home side.
In one of the most entertaining Champions League group stage games of recent times, it was the Premier League champions who took home all three points thanks to a 93rd minute winner from Michy Batshuayi.
There is, of course, an element of luck in scoring with the very last kick of the game, but Chelsea were undeniably the better side over the course of 90 minutes; Simeone agrees.
The ex-Argentina international is quoted by Sky Sports admitting that his Atletico side were simply second best on the night, and Chelsea deserved to win:
“Chelsea were the better team. The draw was a good result for us, but at the very end they had the patience to move the ball round very well and scored at the last second.”
“We couldn’t really play our game because our rival was better. They had better intensity, they were better at a tactical level.”
“We were never comfortable. It was a fair victory for Chelsea because they just played better.”
Simeone’s humility is commendable, you don’t see it enough from football managers nowadays. We have no doubt he will be out for revenge in the reverse fixture later this year.
