There’s some big news coming out of Cobham today. The Chelsea website report that Eduardo has signed a new one-year contract.
You know? Eduardo? The Goalkeeper? Yeah, that one.
Eduardo joined Chelsea on a free transfer last summer, but has not made an appearance for the Blues all season. The Portuguese international has been behind both Thibaut Courtois and Asmir Begovic in the pecking order, and has subsequently been starved of any opportunities.
Eduardo spoke to the Chelsea website, and revealed his delight at committing his future to the Premier League champions:
I am very happy to stay at Chelsea for another year. This season has been very successful for the club, and everybody has made me feel like a part of the family. I hope next season can be just as positive and we can win many more trophies.
At 34-years-old, he is very much in the swan-song of his footballing career, but he is still able to play a, albeit small, role in Antonio Conte’s squad.
You never know, if he’s lucky he might get some minutes on the clock next campaign. Now all we need is for Eduardo’s goalkeeping counterpart Thibaut Courtois to commit his future to Chelsea.
