Did Antonio Conte want Danny Drinkwater at Chelsea? ‘Journalist’ Duncan Castles has revealed on ‘The Transfer Window‘ podcast that he doesn’t believe he did.
Drinkwater joined the Premier League champions on Deadline Day for what the Guardian reported to be a £35M fee. On paper, it looks like a smart piece of business from the Blues, irrespective of the inflated transfer fee.
The former Leicester City man will reunite with ex-partner N’Golo Kante and provide some much needed steel in Conte’s midfield. His superb passing range will also be of great benefit to all four of our wing-men.
However, despite the Drinkwater acquisition making perfect sense, Castles has felt the need to share his baseless opinion on the matter. If you’re not familiar with him, he is incredibly biased about all things Jose Mourinho, and has developed a weird vendetta against Chelsea since we parted with the man formerly known as ‘The Special One’.
Speaking on ‘The Transfer Window’, Castles revealed that he does not think that Drinkwater measures up to former Blue Nemanja Matic, who found himself surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge and subsequently shifted to Manchester United.
“I think there’s no way you can describe him as an equivalent to Nemanja [Matic].”
“It’s classic Chelsea where they cash in on a player that another side wants and then they spend less on the replacement to bring in,” Castles added.
Castles went on to round off his nonsensical monologue on The Transfer Window by adding:
“He’s not the player Conte wants as a second midfielder.”
It’s almost as though Castles is defending his beloved Mourinho’s decision making in bringing in a player who had been underperforming for 18 months – but that’s none of our business.
