There’s no better football league in the world than the Premier League. Chelsea have had a roller-coaster couple of seasons, but they find themselves sitting top of the league winning for the 13th game in a row at home to Stoke City today.
Chelsea won the title during the 2014/15 season, but they fell off a cliff last season (2015/16) and finished 10th place, which was the worst finish for the Blues since finishing 11th place during the 1995/96 campaign.
We’re at roughly the halfway point of the Premier League season and Chelsea are sitting in first place. The Blues have a 16-1-2 record (49 Points), which puts them six points clear of second place Liverpool (40 Points).
The odds on Chelsea winning the Premier League is 4/6 at Bet365, which isn’t worth betting. Chelsea paid much better prior to the season kicking off and they could still pay considerably more if they start to struggle.
There are still 20 matches left for every team and it wouldn’t take much for the Blues to relinquish the lead they have built up. If you want to punt on Chelsea winning the title, I advise waiting a bit to see if you can get a better price.
All it would take to get a much better price would be another month like September for Chelsea. Chelsea were winless during September (0-1-2) and they have some tough matches coming up on the schedule.
Depending upon what happens over the next month of action, the match between Chelsea and Liverpool at the end of January could be pivotal in the title race, especially if the Reds are able to continue winning consistently.
Chelsea have been incredible defensively this season and have only allowed 11 goals (0.61 GPG), which ranks Chelsea first in goals conceded. Apart from Tottenham, every other team has conceded 16+ goals this season.
The Blues rank 4th in goals scored (2.11 GPG). Diego Costa leads the Premier League in goals (13), but Eden Hazard has stepped up after a disappointing 2015/16 season and he has scored nine goals already this season.
If Hazard continues producing at this rate during the second-half of the season then Chelsea should have no issues hanging onto first place. They don’t need to score many goals when they allow less than a goal per game.
I believe Chelsea will win the Premier League title, but it won’t be without fireworks. My recommendation is to wait until the betting odds improve on the Blues before betting on them to win the title at this point.
I also wanted to briefly discuss the Premier League top goalscorer betting market.
Costa is paying 13/8 to win the golden boot award this season and those are great odds considering Costa has been able to score 13 goals in 17 appearances. If he can stay on the pitch, the goals will keep coming.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic (12), Alexis Sanchez (12), Sergio Aguero (10) and Romelu Lukaku (10) all have scored 10+ goals already too so there will be plenty of competition in this betting market during the second-half of the season.
Ibrahimovic is starting to get more comfortable with Manchester United and he’s paying 4/1 odds. Aguero is also paying 4/1 odds and if he can stay on the pitch, he has the best chance at catching Costa.
Aguero has scored 10 goals in 12 appearances, but he keeps getting suspended. However, Aguero is capable of scoring multiple goals in a match very quickly and he’s only three goals behind Costa right now.
