Toby Alderweireld is not focusing on his contract situation at Tottenham despite reported interest from Chelsea and Manchester City, report Goal.
As per Goal, Alderweireld’s contract with Spurs comes to an end in 2019, meaning he is entering the final two years of his current deal. It is reported that his current employers do have the option to extend his contract by a further year – but there’s a catch.
Goal claim that if Spurs trigger the clause in Alderweireld’s contract to tie him down to a one-year extension, there will then be a £25M release clause in his contract. Goal note that both Chelsea and Manchester City would be interested in securing his services.
Alderweireld, however, is not focusing on the situation surrounding his future. Goal quote the Belgium international, who says:
“I am trying to focus on the pitch, trying to help the team, give my quality on the field – that’s important and the rest will come, I have my father and my agent who are sorting out that kind of thing.”
He seems reluctant to commit his future to Tottenham, which could prove to be good news for Chelsea later down the line. He’s one of the best defenders in the Premier League and would be extremely welcome in SW6.
