Chelsea could be provided with an opportunity to sign one of the best defenders in the Premier League during the summer transfer window.
If you tuned into the Blues’ Premier League title triumph under the stewardship of Antonio Conte last time around, you could be forgiven for thinking that defensive reinforcements would not be high on our shopping list.
However, our previously sturdy back-line has turned flimsy this time around. David Luiz, who was a cornerstone in Conte’s defence last season, has been ousted, and Gary Cahill has continued to underperform.
There is a real possibility that we could look to sign a defender or two in the summer window, and one of the best in the country could be on offer.
According to the Times (via talkSPORT), Tottenham Hotspur centre-back Toby Alderweireld is in the shop window having been unable to agree a contract extension with his current employers.
It’s believed that he is demanding a £150K-a-week wage packet, whereas Spurs are only prepared to pay £110K-a-week. Chelsea would be more than capable of paying that figure – let’s hope we’re interested!
