What a bargain this would be.
Napoli striker Dries Mertens has a £25m release clause that could be activated in any of the upcoming transfer windows, as per the Daily Star.
This past summer, the player revealed to Sky Sports that there was interest from Chelsea as well as other clubs.
“Yes there was interest [from Chelsea], and from other clubs also, but in my head there was never an intention to change clubs.”
Mertens is traditionally a winger. However, Napoli’s main striker Arkadiusz Milik injured his anterior cruciate ligament, just like he did last season. In his absence, Mertens has taken his position and has been a revelation.
The 30-year-old scored 33 goals in all competitions last season and is off to a great start this season scoring 11 goals.
This goalscoring form has seen Mertens become one of the most prolific strikers in Europe which is why so many clubs are after him.
It may come down to the player being able to choose which club he wants if several teams activate the clause.
What would Mertens bring to Chelsea?
The flexibility Mertens has in playing in various attacking positions is one of the player’s best traits. Even if Antonio Conte gets a new centre-forward in the January window it shouldn’t affect the possibility of Mertens joining the Blues for next season.
Mertens would be unbelievable with players like Alvaro Morata and countryman Eden Hazard around him.
Of course, his greatest trait has to be the amount of goals he scores.
The only negatives to this signing are Mertens age and how he will adapt to the Premier League.
However, in the current crazy transfer market, £25M for one of the best strikers in Europe would be hard to pass on.
