Academy product Ike Ugbo has joined Championship side Barnsley on a season-long loan, according to the official Chelsea website.
The speedy 18-year-old forward, as per the Express, was wanted by a string of Championship sides that included Bristol City, Leeds United, and Wolves.
However, Barnsley have won the race to sign the young striker who joins the Tykes for the 2017-2018 season.
Speaking to the official Barnsley website, Ugbo’s new manager Paul Heckingbottom seemed delighted to have completed the deal.
“We’re really pleased at being able to bring one of the brightest young strikers out there to Oakwell… I am really excited about what Ike can bring to the team”, explained Heckingbottom.
Ugbo had a superb campaign for the Chelsea U23s and U18s sides last season, scoring 23 goals in 35 matches.
His performances at club level were recognised by England bosses who selected the Academy striker for the Under-20s tournament in Toulon which England went on to win on penalties.
We wish Ike the best of luck, and keep our fingers crossed that he is not the latest Chelsea youngster to be swallowed by our loan system. Going on loan should not be seen as a negative, it should be an opportunity to showcase your talent.
