Chelsea are trailing Manchester City in the race to sign Ajax sensation Frenkie de Jong, according to the Daily Star.
We won’t hold it against you if you haven’t heard of them. Man City are a small team from up north that were found founded in 2008 after being taken over by the mega-rich Abu Dhabi United Group. We’re almost a decade late to this joke, aren’t we?
Frenkie de Jong is one of the finest young players that has been at Ajax for several years, and with the success of their illustrious academy, that’s saying something!
Though de Jong was not produced by Ajax, he has come on leaps and bounds since his arrival in Amsterdam, and his good performances do not appear to have gone unnoticed.
According to the Daily Star, the 20-year-old has been scouted by both Chelsea and Arsenal, but it’s Man City who are leading the race to sign him.
It’s difficult to see how de Jong would get any sort of significant game-time at the Etihad, with Pep Guardiola’s midfield ranks already being packed full of quality.
Then again, he’d likely be the latest cog in our well-oiled player developing loan system if it were us whose pursuit of de Jong proved fruitful.
