You think your life has changed too fast? Tell that to Ola Aina. The soon-to-be 20 year old has gone from being frozen out completely by a certain individual and almost leaving our club, to now being our best performing full-back this pre-season.
The youngster was on the verge of ending his Chelsea career before it even began. His contract was set to expire this summer and it seemed like he was intent on leaving. But for some reason-maybe Conte- he has changed his mind and eventually put pen to paper, tying himself to the Blues until 2020. Afterwards, he joined up with our main team for pre-season and put in some head turning performances, the most recent being against Liverpool in an unfreindly friendly against Liverpool:
That game and the two before seem to have had an obvious influence on the opinion of new head coach Antonio Conte, who has shown more trust in the youngster with each passing game, and who might be contemplating keeping Aina as one of the tools the manager will use to ignite the inferno he has promised a few weeks ago.
The situation on the defensive wings is a little weird with us. Our best player there, quality wise, is torn between the left flank, where he’s mostly played over the past few seasons, and the right flank, his natural spot and the position where he can actually cross (that is very important in Conte’s system apparently). Added to Azpi we have a young, expensive and very much struggling left-back in Baba Rahman and of course “Branabear” Ivanovic, who is obviously past his best. So having one more option could be helpful to Conte, and could also give him a new selection headache. The Italian might find sorting this dilemma out to be one of the biggest challenges of his first (and hopefully not only) season as Chelsea manager.
The debate on whether we should buy a new full-back is importantly related to Aina’s future, but after his confident and confidence-inspiring performances, it would be prudent if we at least contemplated keeping him and letting go of someone else, if we want to add another full-back to our ranks this summer
