The Blues will be back in the Champions League next season after a strong finish to their league campaign secured third spot in the Premier League. But before they return to European football’s biggest stage, they have the small matter of a Europa League final against London rivals to negotiate.
Chelsea rightly begin the game as firm favourites but the odds on offer for an outright victory are unlikely to get too many pulses racing. We can’t to find anything better than 7/5 in Chelsea’s favour at the time of writing, while several leading sports betting sites UK sites including Bet365 and Betfair are backing them at a super stingy 5/4. If you want to generate some decent returns come 29th May, you’ll need to get creative.
Total Goals Bets
Arsenal’s defensive woes have proven to be their Achilles heel again this season. Unai Emery’s team conceded a whopping 51 goals in their 38 Premier League games, a statistic that cost them a place in the top four. However, in Pierre-Emerick Aubumeyang and Alexandre Lacazette, they also boast one of the most potent strike partnerships in European football.
While Chelsea will be confident of exposing the Gunners’ porous backline, the Blues have shown their own defensive vulnerabilities this season – not least in heavy defeats at Manchester City and Bournemouth. Both sides are stronger going forward so I’m expecting goals. 3.5 goals or more at 13/5 looks like decent value, especially if you incorporate it into an accumulator.
If there are plenty of goals then you’d expect the usual suspects to be in amongst them. Hazard, Higuain, Lacazette and Aubumeyang are all poorly priced but there are some interesting options further down the betting slip. Ruben Loftus-Cheek has been in fine goalscoring form during Chelsea’s Europa League run but an injury picked up during the friendly with New England Revolution has ruled him out of the final. That opens the door for Ross Barkley, who is tempting at 23/5 to score any time or 21/2 to net the opener.
Barclay is our top tip but Willian is another who could entice a few punters at 17/2 to score first and 18/5 as an anytime goalscorer. David Luiz is our pick as an outlying punt. He has always provides a threat coming forward from the back and is well priced 12/1 to bag anytime and 28/1 to bet the first or last goals. On the other side, Aaron Ramsay plays his last game for the Gunners and is 4/1 on to mark the occasion with a trademark strike from midfield.
I always enjoy a scorecast flutter and again, there’s plenty of value to be found when you bet on a goalscorer-final score combo. Given that I’ve already tipped him to score, I’d be tempted by Ross Barclay to score anytime and Chelsea to win 3-1 at 40/1. If you’d rather hedge your bets, then Barclay to score anytime and Chelsea to win still looks decent at 7/1.
I’d be even more tempted by David Luiz to score anytime and Chelsea to win 2-1 at 66/1 and you can double those odds if you plump for the same player and a 3-2 victory for Chelsea. I’m also liking the look of a 3-1 Chelsea victory with Ramsay scoring Arsenal’s consolation goal at 70/1.
