Chelsea’s midfield situation is not great right now.
Put it this way – they started this game with Romeo Lavia and Malo Gusto as their starting paid. Enzo Fernandez is pushing to leave and Moises Caicedo isn’t fully fit.
There are rumours about new signings, but nothing was done in time for this game. It didn’t hurt Xabi Alonso’s team in the first half – they took a 3-0 lead with less possession than Brighton. But after the break they began to wobble, and after the away team scored twice it was time to shore things up.
Caicedo limps off in huge blow to Chelsea’s season

Xabi Alonso brought on Reece James and Moises Caicedo to play in the middle, and while it worked well for the Blues, who scored a fourth and looked far more comfortable, its’ come at a cost. After barely 10 minutes on the pitch having returned from injury, Caicedo was taken off limping. He appeared to be very emotional too.
It’s such a shame to see – he’s essential to this team if we want to win anything this season. We await post-game updates from Alonso on how bad the problem is. It may be a recurrence of what was keeping him out, or something new entirely.
In other news…
Xabi Alonso’s changes got Chelsea back into a commanding position – but it seems they may have cost him Caicedo.
Chelsea started the game really strongly with two early goals that set them on their way.
