Xabi Alonso has given his first extended interview as Chelsea manager, and in it he was asked about how he thought the summer had gone so far in terms of getting the squad to his liking.
“We have taken a few steps but I feel that we can still take a few more,” Alonso said, hinting for the first time about a desire for Chelsea to make more transfers. We assume that refers to incoming as well as outgoing. Danny Welbeck and Mykhailo Mudryk have just arrived in Hong Kong, and Pep Chavarria and Jordan Henderson could soon follow. The manager has had serious backing already, and is clearly being given a lot of power and say in the club’s targets.
Alonso on Chelsea’s situation last season
Despite that backing, it was a risk for Alonso to take this job, given how badly things ended up last season. The coach insists it’s not as bad as it looks, however.
“The situation was not as bad as it looked at the end of last season,” Alonso claimed when explaining why he took the job.
“There is big potential to improve and let’s see how long it takes.”

Alonso also spoke about Mykhailo Mudryk and what the club are planning to do to help integrate him after 18 months out of the game.
Danny Welbeck is another attacking addition to Chelsea’s front line this week, and he officially signed for the club yesterday, and will also head out to join the squad in Asia.
