The English transfer window has closed, and by now we all know how it ended for Chelsea. With a few hours to go, the deal to move Enzo Fernandez to Man City was done. At that point, moves for Lamine Camara and Manu Kone had both hit dead ends. The briefings came out from Chelsea that they were happy with their existing midfield options.
That was soon proved to be nonsense when the club doubled down on attempts to sign Camara. They almost had it over the line, before Monaco pulled out.
Chelsea counting games until January
So that leaves Chelsea with their existing midfield options after all. Fans on Twitter have done the calculations and looked ahead to the opening of the January window. We will play about 23 or 24 games between now and then, depending on our progress in the Carabao Cup. So are out current options enough? That’s where the debate is.
Moises Caicedo is going to be expected to play most games. That’s a challenge, given he’s already out injured. His main partners are likely to be our two other most injury prone players, Romeo Lavia and Reece James. You’d do well to be confident in any of those three staying fit from now until January.
After them, you’ve got new man Valentin Barco, who is surely going to play a lot. We even saw Malo Gusto start in midfield last week. And what of Jordan Henderson?
If everything goes to plan and the main trio avoid injury, Chelsea will be fine. But when was the last time everything went to plan?
