“I don’t want Enzo Fernandez to leave Chelsea, he’s a wonderful footballer. Unfortunately, that is the position Chelsea are in,” Cole said.

“They finished 10th, but have some brilliant players who are underachieving, so the big clubs will be sniffing around and the players will want to be playing at the top level and competing for trophies.

“That is one of the things Xabi Alonso is going to have to sort out – the futures of Cole Palmer and Enzo Fernandez – because if they go, you can replace them, but it’s going to cost a lot of money.

“Fernandez is as good a midfielder in his position in Europe as you will find.”
