Bild in Germany are reporting growing interest from Premier League teams in Jarrel Quansah, the Bayer Leverkusen defender who is gradually making himself into an England regular.

They say that Chelsea and Arsenal are among the teams targeting the 23 year old, who is shining in the German top flight and looking like a top class defender in the making.

What’s interesting is the fit at Chelsea. Quansah plays at Leverkusen, where Xabi Alonso had so much success as a manager a couple of years ago. They still play a wing back system similar to the one Alonso introduced, and there’s a sense that the defender would be able to slot in at Chelsea right away given his experience in that setup.

He’s usually the central defender on the right of the three – so in this case he’d be battling Wesley Fofana and Josh Acheampong for minutes.

At some point, however, we’ve got to step back and wonder why continually buying new defenders isn’t making us any better defensively.

In other news…

John Terry has seen things he likes in this new Chelsea team, but still reckons they will be miles off Arsenal at the top of the table come May.

Chelsea got off lightly for breaking Premier League rules – but they did a lot of work to make that the case.
