With the transfer window in the Premier League now closed, it’s time for that classic period of reflection where we get told by insiders what could have happened.
There’s a textbook example today from the well connected Santi Aouna, who broke a lot of late news about Chelsea’s chase for a midfielder. He claims that the Blues had a verbal agreement with Roma for the transfer of Manu Kone, with discussions happening directly between club owners.
But there wasn’t time for Roma to find a replacement, and their manager Gian Piero Gasperini had also made it clear he didn’t want to lose a key player.
Chelsea’s late midfielder chase ended up backfiring
This was always going to be the challenge looking for a midfielder right at the end of the window – any team you buy from is going to be in the same position as you are.
In the end, it was pretty predictable that teams would shut down the Blues’ interest with so little time left. Getting the Enzo Fernandez deal done earlier might just have made the crucial difference. Instead, trying to squeeze £10m more out of Man City may cost us dearly.
