An interesting chat with the ever positive Chelsea fan and former player Joe Cole produced some interesting results for the Sun.
Much like the rest of us, he’s super positive about the appointment of Xabi Alonso, and he made particular note of the “manager’s” title.
Cole wants Alonso to be “allowed to do his job”
“If he’s allowed to do his job, he brings authority because no player in that dressing room could question his reputation, his knowledge, and his ability as a player and a manager,” Cole said.
“It’s about Chelsea now, will they allow Xabi Alonso to do his work? You have to give him authority, and you don’t know when that authority will come into question, and it will be interesting when that situation arises where the ownership has to either bow down to what Alonso wants, or do it their way.
“I hope it happens early in his tenure, where his opinion goes against the board’s opinion, hopefully the board will let him to the job he was brought in to do.
“I don’t want it just to be a case of, we’ll get a big name in just to appease the fans and say all the right things in the media, and then they don’t give him the players he wants, or allow him to do his job.
In other news…
Cole was also realistic about the future of Enzo Fernandez – Chelsea may struggle to hold on to one of Europe’s best in his position.
Simon Phillips has suggested that a Serie A team has been looking at one of Chelsea’s regulars, hoping to do a deal this summer.
