Chelsea have made it official with a post on their website – Marc Cucurella has left the club to join Real Madrid.
It’s a move that has come from nowhere, to some degree. There was a lot of talk about Cucurella going back to Spain, but Barcelona and Atletico Madrid were the teams mentioned most often. Fabrizio Romano dropped the bomb yesterday that Real were interested, and since then things have moved really quickly.
According to David Ornstein, it’s a €55m fee with an extra €5m in bonuses on the side. That is very similar to the fee we paid Brighton for him in 2022.
Cucurella does well to turn around slow start at Chelsea
Cucurella did not have an easy time at Chelsea to begin with, and it was impressive how he battled back to change opinions about him. He ended up as a key player for Enzo Maresca, playing an important role in the Club World Cup win a year ago, as well as in the run of games at the end of the season which got us back into the Champions League.
In other news…
Nobody is quite sure what to expect from Xabi Alonso tactically next season – and the loss of Cucurella changes things further.
Real Madrid are insisting they’re going to make a big splash this summer – and that could play into Chelsea’s hands to some degree.
