Chelsea have been signing players all summer, but it looked like a new goalkeeper wouldn’t be among them.

That all changed this week, when rumours of interest in Emi Martinez quickly turned to reality. It was really impressive how fast the deal was done, and many fans and pundits are putting it down to new manager Xabi Alonso and his decisiveness.

Xabi Alonso praised for his ruthless side

Emi Martinez warms up for Chelsea

“There was some uncertainty about whether Emiliano Martinez would feature given his arrival was only confirmed this morning but the goalkeeper was registered in time,” Nick Wright wrote for Sky Sports.

“Xabi Alonso shows his ruthless side as Robert Sanchez is immediately cast aside. The Spaniard endured another difficult evening in Chelsea’s season opener against Fulham and it seems Alonso has already seen enough. Martinez should offer more security. Sanchez, meanwhile, is not even in the squad.”

Alonso is very diplomatic in interviews, but his actions speak louder than words. It’s pretty clear that he pushed for Martinez after just one game of Sanchez, and he’s not waited even a day to get the new man is. If that’s not ruthless, we don’t know what is.

In other news…

Enzo Fernandez was left out of the team today, and Xabi Alonso was forced to answer some awkward questions about the midfielder’s future.

Emi Martinez is straight into the team today – which meant some difficult questions for Xabi Alonso about Robert Sanchez.
