Alonso answers questions about Penders start; gives Caicedo and Palestra injury update

Xabi Alonso didn’t confirm that Mike Penders would start tomorrow night against Luton, but he didn’t deny it either.

Xabi Alonso is taking his press conference ahead of Chelsea’s League Cup game against Luton tomorrow night, and he was asked about whether backup keeper Mike Penders would start.

The big Belgian is looking to oust Robert Sanchez after the Spaniard’s latest mistake, and we would suspect he does get the start tomorrow. But Alonso wasn’t giving much away:

“He’s in the squad and will have an opportunity.”

The only reason to leave him out tomorrow if is he’s starting at the weekend, and we don’t think things have gone that far yet. Another bad game for Sanchez, however, and it won’t be far off.

Pair to miss Chelsea’s cup game

There was also an update on Marco Palestra and Moises Caicedo, who missed Monday’s game with minor injuries.

“Both not [ready] for tomorrow. Hopefully Moi can make it for the weekend. Maybe we need to check a little bit more with Marco,” Alonso said.

Neither would have been expected to start an early round League Cup game anyway. But it’s disappointing that Palestra (and maybe both of them) won’t be around for the game at the weekend. Brighton are a good outfit and will provide a big challenge for a Blues team which is still very much just coming together.

In other news…

Chelsea might sell Enzo Fernandez – and it might work out for the best for the Blues, given their tactical setup now.

Axel Disasi has joined Crystal Palace on loan for the season, Chelsea announced today.
