We’ve been waiting since May to hear Xabi Alonso utter his first words as Chelsea coach – today, in mid-July, we finally got there. Of course there are a number of issues on the agenda, but none is bigger than the future of Enzo Fernandez.
The Argentina midfielder has done his best since the spring to force his way out of Chelsea. But now Real Madrid have publicly denied their interest, and nobody else has stepped forward.
While he won’t be popular with the fans, the midfielder still hasn’t burned all of his bridges, and can come back from the ledge. Alonso’s words clearly opened the door for that return.
Enzo increasingly likely to be at Chelsea next season

“We have spoken,” the coach admitted when asked if he had been in contact with the Argentina midfielder, who is still at the World Cup preparing for a semi final against England.
“As you can understand, what was said remains private.”
However when asked if he was keen to keep the former Benfica man, Alonso’s anser was more clear: “yes, yes.”
We can’t see anyone offering the £100m or more Chelsea would want for him. So Enzo will come back from the World Cup and start work with his new coach, and hope that this can all be water under the bridge.
It remains to be seen how the fans feel about that.
In other news…
The new manager was asked about what formation his team was likely to play, and while he didn’t give specifics, he made it clear it was something he had already been thinking about.
Alonso also spoke about Alejandro Garnacho, who has not been training this week as the club try to find him a transfer away.
