The Xabi Alonso era at Chelsea has begun. The new manager took his first press conference yesterday, and today he’s had a chat with the club website.
There he gave his impressions of the players after his first few days of training.
“I have already felt that they want to have a good season,” Alonso said of the group.
“After last year, we are starting from zero. There are some new faces, from the staff, from the manager, but they are really keen on whatever we are doing.
“We can’t really tell that much – it’s just four days with some of the players, but you see that the energy is good, the excitement is there, and we need to prepare well.
“We have time for that, and I said before, it’s very important that we build the right mentality to compete.’
Alonso can still improve his weak squad’s mentality
“Mentality” was a huge problem for this squad last year, and while many fans would like to see that fixed with transfers, it’s simply not possible to throw out half the team in one go. A lot can still be done to improve the mentality of the players we’ve got, and that’s Alonso’s job.

Chelsea have got a serious offer for Alejandro Garnacho – it doesn’t feel like the Blues will accept it, but it’s a promising sign that there are teams interested.
Chelsea have sold three players this summer – but they still have perhaps 6 or 7 more they would like to move on permanently before the window is closed.
