The Athletic’s Liam Twomey has done a long piece today about Malo Gusto, and it’s an interesting one.
It sums up rather well the full back’s strange situation at Chelsea. On the one hand, Man City wanted him this summer, and Chelsea were said to be valuing him at something like £80m.
On the other hand, Chelsea fans don’t really rate him, and are especially frustrated to see him used in midfield.
That part isn’t his fault – we’re sure he’d rather be in his natural position too. But his efforts on the pitch in general are being questioned.
Gusto struggles in moments as Chelsea drop points again
Twomey notes that the normally reserved Xabi Alonso despaired about “soft” defending after the game against Hull at the weekend. The manager didn’t name names, but Twomey makes the fair assumption it was aimed at Gusto, who was bullied by Ryan Giles for the first goal, and also was seen being bodied by Semi Ajayi in key moment in the game.
