It’s quite amazing how quickly modern football moves. Just a few years ago, the very idea of a specific set piece coach would have sounded strange. But here we are in 2026 and we’ve reached the stage where teams are buying them off each other like they were players.
What’s perhaps even more amazing is that the coach in question is a pretty recognisable figure in the modern game. We’ve gone from no set piece coaches at all to set piece coaches who fans recognise.
Chelsea in race to sign hot property set piece coach
According to Nizaar Kinsella at the BBC, Chelsea have their sighs on Aston Villa’s set piece guru Austin MacPhee.
They face competition from other Premier League clubs and some Saudi Pro League teams.
Villa have been at the top of the table for xG created from set pieces in MacPhee’s time at the club, and they have been solid defensively too. Chelsea paid to sign Bernardo Cueva from Brentford two years ago, but it was announced earlier this summer that he would be moving into a behind the scenes position at the club.

Chelsea have agreed a deal for Maxence Lacroix and will soon announce the signing of the defender.
While Lacroix is about to come in, Trevoh Chalobah will be going out. The defender is close to a move to Serie A after Como finally agreed to pay the €30m fee that Chelsea want.
