Former Manchester United and Everton defender Phil Neville believes the academy at Chelsea should be closed down, the Metro reports.
Manager Antonio Conte has complained several times this season about the lack of depth in the squad. Injuries have already taken a toll on the Blues squad just two months into the season.
The club’s recent performances have shown this. Based off the matches against Crystal Palace and Roma, N’Golo Kante has been a big loss and especially defensively, we have been poor.
Now Neville has been critical of Conte and the club insisting that youngsters should be given a chance, instead of being loaned out as the Metro reports.
Neville is quoted by the Metro saying.
“They have to go out on loan because Conte’s coming out saying they’ve only got 11 players. And to be fair it’s a disgrace, they should close their academy.”
Despite how hard it is for our young players to make an impression for the first team, this has been an issue for several years, not just under Antonio Conte.
John Terry is regarded as the last player to come out of Chelsea’s academy. Terry went onto become our captain at the club he started at and left as a legend.
Andreas Christensen has also shown that going out on loan can help your chances of playing for us.
