Chelsea fans tore into Gary Cahill on Twitter yesterday afternoon after the Blues captain put in a dismal display during the 0-0 stalemate with Arsenal.
Cahill had not featured in the Premier League since the opening day when he was sent off against Burnley. Antonio Rudiger had deputised in his absence and scarcely put a foot wrong. Yet, as soon as Cahill was back available for selection, Antonio Conte opted to fast-track him straight back into the starting side.
Chelsea fans are not happy at all, and understandably so. Despite keeping a clean sheet against the Gunners, Cahill’s distribution from the back-line was poor and the team suffered as a result.
It is difficult to see why Conte drafted him straight back into his starting eleven. What sort of message does it send out when both Rudiger and Andreas Christensen have performed in his absence, yet are shunned when he returns?
Many of the Blues faithful took to Twitter to share their discontent. Here’s how some of them reacted to the England international’s forgettable performance.
I really don’t understand why a solid back line has to be disrupted. Rudiger was brilliant in all the games.
Cahill is on a downhill.

If Cahill costs Christensen a Chelsea career I will never forgive Conte.

Chelsea look so uncomfortable on the ball at the back. Gary Cahill doesn’t inspire any iota of confidence.

Picking Cahill over Rudiger looks like a blunder now. Rudiger is capable of playing passes quicker and the 1-2 seconds make a difference.

Willian & Cahill off. Please. They’re utter trash. QPR level players.
