The Athletic’s top 50 players in the Premier League is pure clickbait for the international break and, well, we fell for it.
It’s a slightly confusing list – it’s based on how well players have done in the first 5 weeks of the season, but also takes into account how good the player has been in the past.
So you get some slightly curious results, like Moises Caicedo ranking in the top 15 despite having played just 13 minutes all season.
Chelsea’s attackers score highly in Premier League top 50
Chelsea’s top rated player is Morgan Rogers, who has had a very impressive start to life at Stamford Bridge. He’s 11th, with Caicedo just behind him in 12th, Cole Palmer in 14th and Joao Pedro in 18th. Reece James is 31st, and Emi Martinez clings on in 37th, despite a pretty horrific start to life as Chelsea first choice.
It’s pretty telling that James is the only defender on the list for the Blues – he’s been used as a midfielder anyway. If we want to achieve anything this season, we will need one of our centre backs cracking the top 50 by the end of the campaign.
