Journalist Duncan Castles believes that Chelsea have a fighting chance of winning the Champions League this season, report the Daily Star.

The Premier League champions are back in the competition this term, having watched from the sidelines last time around. The Blues looked to be in a strong position to progress into the knockout-stages as group winners, but fell short against Atletico Madrid in the final group game and subsequently finished second.

Champions League
Could Chelsea defy the odds and win the Champions League this season?

Despite our shaky start in the Champions League, Castles still believes that we have a chance of going all the way in it for just the second time in our history.

The journalist is quoted by the Daily Star saying that now Chelsea have little hope of retaining their Premier League title, we can now turn our attentions to the Champions League:

“I think Chelsea are really good candidates for this. They’ve sorted out their Premier League form to a stage where they are quite comfortable of qualifying for next season’s competition.”

“They’re not going to win the Premier League. Antonio Conte absolutely wants to win the Champions League above all else, this is his last chance to do it with Chelsea.”

Can we do it?

Probably not.

We have the quality to beat anyone in the competition, but there are some major shortfalls in our squad. We’d have to invest heavily in January to stand a chance, and we’d be lucky to find any players of Champions League quality who are not already cup-tied.

Antonio Conte’s Chelsea can not be considered one of the favourites to win the Champions League.
