Opinion: Chelsea should be moving in on player after director comments

As Chelsea get ready for the biggest game of their season so far this evening in the quarter final of the League Cup, many thoughts now will also be on the January transfer window to help boost their season.

As we know, Chelsea have been looking at potential new strikers for next month, but they appear to be few and far between.

As well as that though, some of the targets being linked are just not gettable next month.

Victor Osimhen looks impossible until the summer, and Viktor Gyokeres has a release clause worth over £85m and is also relatively unproven.

So for me that only leaves one option, and he IS gettable next month – Ivan Toney of Brentford.

Don’t take my word for it that he’s gettable, take the word of the club’s technical director, Lee Dykes.

“I am so excited for Ivan to come back because I see him out there in training and he is some player; it looks like he’s never been away,” Dykes told the club website.

“There’s a real ambition from him and I can see in his eyes that he’s going to be better than he’s ever been; I really believe that will be the case.

“Yes, there will be lots of interest in Ivan in January. Naturally, there should be. He was the third-highest Premier League goalscorer last season – one of them [Harry Kane] has gone to Germany now, so he’s up there as one of the best strikers in the division. He is in the top five in the world, in my opinion.

“So there should be interest, and maybe the time comes very shortly that Ivan moves on to another club. But they will have to pay a decent transfer fee to acquire his services because he is some talent.”

I mean, he’s literally putting Toney on the transfer market next month with these comments. He’s well and truly available, and Sykes is literally trying to drum up interest and start a bidding war for his player.

Toney for me has always been my first choice option purely because he has Premier League experience, has been a club captain, is an England international, and is one of the only all round true number 9’s available right now.

If I was Chelsea, I would be straight on the phone to Dykes now asking what it would take to get Toney over to Stamford Bridge next month.

He’s everything Chelsea needs right now, and we should be all over it.
