Transfer chatter about Granit Xhaka joining Chelsea has fans confused. Some fans new manager Xabi Alonso backed in every way possible. Others think it’s mad to overpay for a 34 year old.

One person has come down firmly on the former side of the argument – ex-Chelsea defender Marcel Desailly.

“If Xabi Alonso really wants Granit Xhaka because he thinks he has something special, why not give him the player? For Alonso to be able to build his philosophy, he needs to have the players he wants around him,” Desailly said on French coverage of the World Cup.

“Look at what PSG has achieved when they gave Luis Enrique the freedom to bring in his own players. When you talk about wingers at Chelsea, there are… I will not name them, you can guess who I’m talking about, some players that have been signed who haven’t been part of the managers philosophy. Successful football clubs let their managers sign the players.”

We couldn’t agree more. It’s generally not a good idea to give a manager too much power – but when you’ve landed a manager way out of your league, it’s worth doing all you can to help him succeed.

In other news…

The rumours about Pep Chavarria coming to Chelsea have appeared from nowhere and now seem to be getting very serious. Marca have a report about our latest bid.

Chelsea are open to selling Malo Gusto this summer, and Man City are interested – but no deal will be done while the Blues have such a hefty asking price.
