Confusion over Joao Pedro contract as new deal appears to be shorter than the last

Chelsea are set to hand Joao Pedro a new contract, but there is some confusion about its length given the way some places are reporting it.

Fabrizio Romano reported it a couple of days ago, and major news sites have now followed up, although we’re still awaiting the official announcement – Joao Pedro has signed a new contract at Chelsea.

It’s just reward for an excellent first season and a very promising summer leading into the second. Interest from other teams was growing, and it made sense for the Blues to lock their Brazilian star down, as well as to pay him at a level commensurate with his importance to the team.

However there’s something curious about his deal – the contract he signed a year ago upon signing was said to be until 2033. This new deal will be until 2032. Why make it shorter? Well, as Nizaar Kinsella explained for the BBC, it won’t actually be. The original contract was actually until 2032, with a year’s option for the club to extend. The new deal will also be until 2032, but will have a two year option.

If the announcements are reporting between the two were consistent, there never would have been this confusion to begin with.

In other news…

Atletico Madrid have been linked to Nicolas Jackson, and are apparently preparing to make a bid for him sooner rather than later.

Xabi Alonso spoke in his press conference yesterday about Reece James and how he intended to use him this season.

Alonso also spoke about his team selection for Monday, not giving anyone much confidence that the players who made it deep into the World Cup will get the chance to start.
