David Alaba’s move away from Bavaria has been one of the most heated topics of discussion in the last couple of days. The versatile defender’s instrumental presence in the Bayern Munich squad saw them win a treble last season, completing a much-revered sextuple this season.
However, with his contract set to expire at the end of the Bundesliga season and renewal talks with the German champions having broken down multiple times, Alaba’s move as a free transfer is much sought-out by some of Europe’s biggest clubs – including Chelsea.
The Austrian has now revealed one condition that any interested club will have to take into consideration before making a move for the 28-year-old.
According to reports from Le Parisien (via BILD), clubs in line to lure him will have to prepare to sign a midfielder and not a defender, with the traditional ball-stopper preferring to move from defense to midfield – preferably in the central role.
This condition might put off interest from several teams such as Real Madrid, the favorites to land him, who already have midfield maestros in the form of Toni Kroos, Luka Modric & Casemiro.
Hansi Flick has played flexible Alaba in several different positions through his tenure as the manager since taking over last season from Niko Kovac. From left-back and centre-back to the central midfield position, Alaba is as versatile as they come.
Chelsea already possess the likes of Jorginho, Billy Gilmour, Mateo Kovacic, and the indispensable N’Golo Kante in the center half & it remains to be seen whether a move for Alaba will prove to be worthwhile.
