Chelsea are still welcoming the players back to their squad, meaning some awkward reunions and big questions.

The last few days have seen a swirl of rumours around Nicolas Jackson, the Chelsea striker set to join up with the first team for training in Hong Kong.

The Senegal star spent last season on loan at Bayern Munich after forcing his way out of Stamford Bridge, and there’s an element of awkwardness about bringing him back into the fold. But going by Xabi Alonso’s first comments about Jackson, it’s more than possible that that’s what’s going to happen.

“Yeah, Nico is a great player. He’s a threat to play against any defence, so we want to have players that can compete, and Nico for sure is one of them,” Alonso said in his press conference today.

“We need to go day by day checking options, but we are happy that Nico is with us.”

So he’s not shut the door on a potential move, but he’s certainly made an effort to bring the striker back in from the cold. If Jackson wants to stay, and if there aren’t any convincing offers, it really sounds like he will be back in the squad this season.

In other news…

Fabrizio Romano has today confirmed that Chelsea are close to completing the loan of backup goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen to Strasbourg.

Moises Caicedo took the player section of the press conference today, where he spoke at length about his teammate Enzo Fernandez and whether he expected to see him again soon.
