Mason Mount’s match-winning goal against Fulham at Craven Cottage gave Chelsea three points for the first time since before Christmas when the Blues won 3-0 at home to West Ham United.
West London neighbors Fulham were surprisingly bull-headed in the back and denied Chelsea a goal until the 22-year-old knocked in a brilliant low-effort in the 78th minute.
Chelsea manager Frank Lampard seemed satisfied with the performance of the lads who he said controlled the game well in the first half and very well had an advantage with Fulham’s red card just before half-time. The calmness and resilience exhibited by his team to break down the opposition defense was put into play with Mount’s winner and he particularly reserved his praise for the youngster.
Lampard said:
“It wasn’t quite there until Mason’s goal, but the patience and movement of the ball was good. It was apt Mason got the goal. His overall performance was outstanding, but the spirit of the team was great.” (Quote via chelseafc.com)
He was quick to point out the fact that he wasn’t at the levels Mason Mount is in, when the midfield legend played his first season at Stamford Bridge – back in 2001.
“He’s been very, very good for us. He only turned 22 last week, and he’s an example of our youth. I came to Chelsea at 22 and I wasn’t blowing the world away in my first year at Chelsea, I was finding my feet. Mason has already got so many games under his belt. His effort and attitude was outstanding.” (Quote via chelseafc.com)
The Chelsea academy talent has regularly featured for Lampard, scoring 2 goals and assisting 4 times in 17 appearances this Premier League season.
