Left-back Baba Rahman will be joining Schalke till the end of the season after struggling for game time at Chelsea, German news outlet Kicker reports.
Baba spent the entirety of last season at the Bundesliga club, often being back-up for current Arsenal left-back Saed Kolisanac.
However, since Kolisanac’s move to the Gunners, Baba is expected to gain more minutes for the club sitting second in the German top flight.
When speaking to Kicker, Schalke manager Domenico Tadesco says the relationship between the player and club could secure a deal that could even surpass till the end of this season.
Tadesco is quoted by Kicker saying:
“He still has a flat here in Gelsenkirchen, he knows Schalke and Schalke knows him. If we could get him on loan from Chelsea for a longer spell we wouldn’t be averse.”
Why did Baba not get into Antonio Conte’s plans?
The Chelsea manager described the Ghanaian as “too attacking” which the player revealed to local German newspaper Ruhr Nachrichten.
Baba’s defensive frailties were shown in his first season in Chelsea after joining the Blues in 2015.
It wouldn’t have hurt to at least put the 23-year-old on the bench in case Marcos Alonso got injured or suspended. However, Conte trusted Kenedy more as Alonso’s deputy despite the possibility of the Brazilian going out on loan if Chelsea sign a left-wing-back this month.
