Olivier Giroud has insisted that he has not thought about leaving Chelsea, despite the fact he’s not a guaranteed striker.
Giroud only scored his first goal of the season against BATE earlier this month. That’s not a fair reflection of his contribution, though, after all this is a man who won the World Cup without scoring a goal.
The Frenchman is his country’s starting striker, despite a lack of goals. You could argue that a bench role at Chelsea will not be enough for him to retain a place in the world champions’ starting eleven, but Giroud isn’t concerned.
Giroud is quoted by Standard Sport essentially ruling out a move away from Chelsea in the foreseeable future:
“I don’t need to put myself under more pressure than that. Of course, I am a competitor and I would like more playing time.”
“But I am in a very big club, with very big players. I am going to fight and for the moment, it is not a question about seeking a departure. I am going to stick in there and do not count on me to give up.”
Giroud may not be a reliable goalscorer, but he’s an effective option off the bench. Keeping hold of him til the end of his contract, then reviewing the situation, looks to be an astute decision.
