Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders had a lot to do last night in an end to end thriller – and one save in particular stood out.

It was a busy night for Mike Penders in his second competitive start for Chelsea – a lot tougher than his previous game against Luton.
But goalkeepers always like a chance to show what they can do, and Penders did just that with one particular superb double save in the first half.
He got his big frame down low to make a close range reaction save, then was back on his feet leaping into the air to stop the follow up. It was some impressive stuff. The big Belgian showed his passing range off during the game too.

Penders proves his worth once again
We’re still a long way off Penders pushing for the number one jersey. He will need to have a few more great games and Martinez a few more stinkers. But it’s not beyond the realms of possibility it happens this year, and it feels like it will be a pretty open competition between them next year.
Penders should get at least 8 starts between the two cup competitions, and you never know when Martinez might pick up an injury or a suspension.
In other news…
Valentin Barco started yesterday and looked really impressive in midfield, even when Chelsea had some difficulties in the first half. He’s done all he can to earn a starting place in the league.
A very earnest Alonso also took responsibility for Chelsea’s first half struggles after he switched the starting team up a little.
