Chelsea had a quiet start to the summer – but they’re back with a bang. They’ve just concluded a British record deal for Morgan Rogers of Aston Villa. The Athletic have today done a really interesting piece on where the attacker will fit into Xabi Alonso’s new look Blues team.
Rogers’ positions give another clue about Alonso plans
Positionally, they note that Rogers’ minute have come mostly as an inside forward off the left, or as a number ten. Less frequently he also featured as a right sided inside forward, or as a striker.
At Chelsea, the plan looks pretty clearly to be to use Rogers and Cole Palmer as inside forwards, cutting in from the flank to support striker Joao Pedro centrally. Rogers likes to come off the left and Palmer off the right, so there is natural harmony there.
This means width will have to come from elsewhere – likely the wing backs. This is another clue that Alonso is planning to move the team to a back five. We’re already excited to see the upcoming friendlies and how we line up.

Fabrizio Romano has made it clear that Valentin Barco is still going to be a Chelsea player before long – the deal is “100% agreed,” and it’s just a matter of confirming it.
Harrison Bettoni is now a Chelsea player, having today signed from Wigan Athletic. He will stay in the academy and then go on loan in January or next summer.
