The World Cup is reaching the final stages, with the eyes of the world on those final few games. But the summer is rolling on and the club season is already almost here. Chelsea had their first day of preseason yesterday, a first chance to see new manager Xabi Alonso as well as a number of new players.
Alonso gets to meet his group – minus a few

It was expected that any player who didn’t participate at the World Cup would be there, and that proved pretty accurate. Players who finished last season injured, including Jamie Gittens, Estevao and Romeo Lavia were all out there – although we suspect Estevao is still not in full team training.
Then there were the summer signings – Emmanuel Emegha, Dastan Satpaev and Geovany Quenda were working hard. Youngsters Ryan Kavuma-McQueen and Landon Emenalo were also visible in the pictures.
Notable by their absence were Marco Palestra, who is presumably still in the middle of his move from Italy, and Alejandro Garnacho, who has been strongly linked with potential transfers away from Chelsea in recent days. Andrey Santos is on the verge of leaving for Manchester United, so he wasn’t present either.
In other news…
Two Serie A teams continue to be linked to Trevoh Chalobah, although the latest reports claim that only one of them has actually made an offer for him.
Jesse Derry’s loan deal to Sporting is almost confirmed – it tells us a lot about Chelsea’s big picture plans for this season.
