England’s World Cup qualifier in Tirana against Albania pitched the first match day winners against one another in Group I. The Three Lions dismantled San Marino 5-0 in the first round – a match in which Mason Mount almost surpassed Spanish legend Xavi’s record. The hosts Albania overcame Andorra by a goal to nil.

England made it two wins out of two with a 2-0 win over Tirana.

Harry Kane opened the scoring before half-time with an accurate header in the right corner – nothing goalkeeper Berisha could do about.

England’s second of the night arrived thanks to a quick press by Raheem Sterling, whose interception fell as a pass in the path of Kane. Kane sent a deft pass to Mount who made a run on the left – a pass unaffected by defender Ismajli’s sliding tackle. Mount picked the ball with a calm touch, before finessing it with a beautiful finish.

The 63rd minute goal put England two goals up and onto six points in the group as leaders after two match days.

Mason Mount is one of the first names on Gareth Southgate’s team sheet and will continue to be so if he keeps putting in impressive performances as this one.
