Former Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp has spoken out about how close Chelsea forward Eden Hazard was to signing for Spurs in 2012.
When speaking for BT Sport, Redknapp claimed that a deal was close and that he had talked with former-Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole. Hazard was described as ‘the best player’ Cole has ever played with. But many of Europe’s elite clubs wanted the then promising Belgian and Spurs eventually missed out on him.
Redknapp is quoted by BT Sport saying:
“Went to France, met him in a hotel room, three hours I was with him. That’s probably why he didn’t sign!”
Tottenham finished fourth in the league that season. However, the Blues’ famous Champions League triumph meant we would enter next season’s competition at Spurs expense.
That’s when Chelsea stepped in and had the offer for Hazard accepted. The then 21-year-old famously announced his move on Twitter.
Hazard has gone on to win two Premier League titles along with winning the League Cup and Europa League. Not to mention the number player of the season accolades our star has won.
Long may Hazard’s success at the champions continue.
