2018 – The year Chelsea tried to sign Peter Crouch and Ashley Barnes, no really

Crouch Chelsea

As it is transfer deadline day and Chelsea are as quiet as a mouse, we decided to look back on a January transfer window that quite frankly was just totally bizarre.

Antonio Conte at the helm, and the Italian stallion wanted to sign a big target man, a good old-fashioned ‘English’ number 9 as such. He wanted someone up there to pump balls up to and make it stick!

Strained relations, ruthlessness, and a board not in-sync with the manager – The stories of Frank Lampard’s Chelsea reign are filtering through now. Read the latest HERE!

The madness started around mid January when The Guardian reported that Chelsea open talks to sign Andy Carroll on a permanent deal. Yep, you read right, a PERMANENT deal!

Then just a couple of days later, Chelsea make contact with Stoke over signing Peter Crouch, according to The BBC. PETER CROUCH! Insane.

As we near the end of the window the desperation starts to really creep up, and Sky Sports report that Chelsea are interested in signing Burnley striker Ashley Barnes!

My days we were on a mad one, so much so that even FIFA’s strongest player Adebayo ‘The Beast’ Akinfenwa was linked (jokingly, I hope!)

The Wycombe Wanderers striker responded on his Twitter after the rumours came up…

“Woke up hearing the Chelsea rumours, I’m flattered but I’ve heard Conte don’t allow chicken at the training ground sorry can’t do it!.”

There was also whispers of Fernando Llorente and Islam Slimani being targets.

Then Chelsea fixed up a little and targeted Edin Dzeko and Olivier Giroud. Dzeko was the subject of a close to being done £44 million double signing from Roma with Emerson Palmieri, as per The Guardian.

Of course we only signed Emerson in the end and got Giroud. Thank god we got Giroud!

What could have been with Crouchy hey!?
