After another terrible performance from the players and another defeat at the weekend vs Wolves, David Ornstein of The Athletic arrives with a perfect dagger at a perfect time.

A couple of weeks ago there was a lot of speculation going around about Manchester City wanting to sign Ben Chilwell, so naturally there was some concerns from Blues fans.

Now, we can officially put that story down, well not quite officially yet, but as good as. Because Ornstein is reporting that Chilwell is set to sign a new 4-year contract extension at Chelsea, seeing him remain at the club until at least 2027.

This is massive news. Chilwell has been superb for Chelsea since arriving from Leicester City, ironically as a Frank Lampard signing.

Despite being plagued by a couple of injuries, he’s become a hugely important player for Chelsea in more ways than one.

Not only does he bring quality and is just a very good football player, he brings the mentality that we lack. He has leadership qualities and always fights for the badge and for his team mates. His energy and passion is what we lack, and getting him tied down to a new longer contract is just as good as any new signing we can make.

If Pep Guardiola comes sniffing around, then you know you have something about you. And Chilwell certainly has.

Let’s get this one over the line and get it officially, and well done to our owners for getting this one sorted out early, and seemingly without drama. Props to them, great result!

What we need to do after this is give Ian Maatsen a place in our squad and sell Marc Cucurella.
